CEC Kargil Attends “Mendok Rgyaspa – Purig Pi Zbyardus” Cultural and Literary Programme at TFC Kargil

Kargil, June 06, 2026: Hon’ble Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, today attended the cultural and literary programme “Mendok Rgyaspa – Purig Pi Zbyardus (Revisiting the Roots)” organized by the Purig Cultural & Literary Society in collaboration with the Ladakh Academy of Art, Culture & Languages (LAACL), Kargil Ladakh at the Amphitheatre, Tourist Facilitation Centre (TFC), Kargil.

The programme brought together local Purgi poets, writers, theatre artists, literary enthusiasts, and members of the public to celebrate and promote the rich linguistic, literary, and cultural heritage of the Purig region. The event served as a platform for literary expression, cultural exchange, and discussions on preserving and promoting indigenous languages and traditions.

Speaking on the occasion, the organizers highlighted the objectives of the “Mendok Rgyaspa” programme, emphasizing the importance of reconnecting with cultural roots and strengthening the foundations of language, literature, and identity. They stressed that preserving indigenous languages and cultural traditions is essential for safeguarding the unique heritage of the region for future generations.

Mementos were presented to distinguished guests and contributors in recognition of their efforts toward the promotion of Purgi language and culture. The organizers also appreciated the contribution of Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon in advocating for the inclusion of the Purgi language among the official languages of Ladakh.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon reflected on the long struggle and collective efforts that led to the recognition of Purgi as an official language of Ladakh. He reiterated his commitment to continuing efforts for the promotion and preservation of other regional languages, including Balti, Dardic, Shina, and other indigenous languages.

The CEC congratulated the Purig Cultural & Literary Society on its registration as a society and lauded its initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting the linguistic and cultural heritage of the region. He emphasized that language and culture form the foundation of a community’s identity and must be preserved and passed on to future generations.

Highlighting the significance of literature and poetry, Dr. Akhoon remarked that poetry serves as a powerful medium to reflect societal realities, developmental aspirations, and contemporary issues. He noted that literary expression can inspire awareness, encourage dialogue, and contribute to positive social and developmental change. He added that poetry and literature have the power to awaken society and bring important issues to the attention of policymakers and governments.

Speaking about tourism, the CEC highlighted the growing potential of pilgrimage, spiritual, cultural, and adventure tourism in Kargil. He stated that Kargil is steadily emerging beyond its historical image as a conflict zone and is increasingly being recognized for its rich cultural heritage, scenic beauty, and tourism opportunities. He further informed that efforts are being made to strengthen cultural linkages with other regions and countries to attract investment, promote tourism, and generate sustainable livelihood and employment opportunities for local youth.

Dr. Akhoon also highlighted the achievements of LAHDC Kargil across various sectors of development and reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to the overall progress of the district. He invited all stakeholders to actively contribute towards the development of Kargil and assured that LAHDC Kargil remains open to constructive suggestions and feedback. He emphasized that Kargil is a region full of hope, opportunities, and immense potential for future growth and prosperity.

The programme also featured vibrant cultural performances by local artists, poets, and theatre performers who showcased the richness of Purig heritage through folk songs, traditional poetry, and cultural presentations. The artists captivated the audience with renditions of traditional Purgi songs, phrases, and literary works that reflected the history, values, customs, and identity of the region. Their performances highlighted the beauty and richness of the Purgi language and underscored the importance of preserving and promoting the region’s unique cultural legacy.

In his vote of thanks, Assistant Director Tourism, Mohd Ali Tak, expressed gratitude to all guests, poets, writers, artists, participants, and organizers for making the programme a success. He welcomed the recognition of Purgi as an official language and expressed hope that similar efforts would continue for the promotion and preservation of other regional languages, including Balti, Dardic, Shina, and others. He also acknowledged the support of various departments and Self-Help Groups (SHGs), whose participation and display of traditional local food stalls added vibrancy to the programme.

The event concluded with poetic recitations, literary presentations, cultural performances, and a renewed commitment towards preserving and promoting the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of Purig and Ladakh.
