DC Kargil Inaugurates District-Level Inter-Zonal Sports Tournament

Kargil, June 13, 2026: Deputy Commissioner Kargil, Rakesh Kumar (IAS) today inaugurated the District-Level Inter-Zonal Sports Tournament, at Khree Sultan Cho Sports Stadium, Biamathang Kargil .

The inauguration ceremony was attended by District Youth Services and Sports Officer (DYSSO) Kargil, District Sheep Husbandry Officer, Kargil, Executive Engineer PDD, Assistant Director Tourism Kargil, Zonal Physical Education Officers (ZPEOs), Physical Education Incharges, teachers, and a large number of student participants from different zones of the district.

Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner lauded the remarkable increase in participation in sports activities across Kargil. He said that while around 450 students participated at the zonal level during the previous year, the number has significantly increased this year, with more than 600 students taking part in the district-level inter-zonal tournament.

Describing the growth in participation as a major achievement, the DC emphasized the vital role of sports in shaping the physical and mental well-being of youth. He said sports not only keep young people mentally fit and disciplined but also guide them in the right direction, helping them stay away from social evils, particularly drug abuse.

The Deputy Commissioner urged students to become ambassadors of the anti-drug movement and spread awareness among their peers and communities regarding the harmful effects of substance abuse. He highlighted that sports provide a constructive platform for channelizing energy and talent while fostering values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.

He further directed ZPEOs and sports officials to conduct a comprehensive gap analysis of sports infrastructure and requirements across zones. The identified gaps, he said, could be addressed through various funding sources, including Samagra Shiksha, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, and LAHDC Council funds, to strengthen sports facilities and opportunities for young athletes.

Expressing optimism about the future of sports in the district, the Deputy Commissioner said he hopes to see participation cross the 1,000-mark in the coming years.

The DC also appreciated the efforts of the Youth Services and Sports Department, Physical Education teachers, Masters, Lecturers, and other stakeholders for their cooperation and dedication in encouraging students to actively participate in sports and extracurricular activities.

Apt to mention here that the tournament will witness competitions in various disciplines and provide a platform for talented athletes from different zones to showcase their skills and compete at the district level.
