In Ladakh, healthcare facilities in Ladakh continue to improve with advanced medical services now being made available even at the Community Health Centre level. In a major milestone, the Community Health Centre at Sankoo has successfully performed its first-ever bilateral Total Knee Replacement surgery in a single sitting on a patient suffering from Grade-IV severe osteoarthritis.
The surgery was conducted by Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Altaf Hussain of CHC Sankoo in collaboration with Dr. Ahmad Ali, Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon from Qamar Ali Akhone Memorial District Hospital, Kargil. Anaesthesia was administered by Senior Consultant Anaesthetist Dr. Asif along with the anaesthesia team.
The successful surgery marks the first advanced joint replacement procedure at CHC Sankoo and is expected to reduce the need for patients from Sankoo and the Suru Valley to travel outside the district for specialized orthopaedic treatment.
The achievement reflects the Health Department’s continued efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and provide quality, affordable and advanced medical care in the remote areas of the Union Territory of Ladakh.
