MP Ladakh Holds Detailed Meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Long-Pending Issues of Ladakh
Hon’ble Member of Parliament from Ladakh had a detailed and fruitful meeting with Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah Ji and raised several long-pending demands and important developmental issues concerning the Union Territory of Ladakh.
The MP reminded the Hon’ble Home Minister that during recent discussions between the Ministry of Home Affairs and representatives of Ladakh, including the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and Leh Apex Body, consensus was reached on several important issues related to constitutional safeguards and a democratic setup for Ladakh.
The Minutes of Meeting were subsequently finalised and signed by representatives of both sides. However, the Draft Proposal based on the consensus is still awaited. The MP urged that the proposal be brought forward and placed in the public domain at the earliest so that the High-Powered Committee can consider and approve it without further delay.Among the remaining issues under the four-point agenda, the MP strongly reiterated the demand for a Ladakh Public Service Commission and urged the government to fast-track pending recruitment processes so that the youth of Ladakh do not suffer due to delays.
The MP also raised the demand for two Parliamentary constituencies for Ladakh, considering the UT’s vast geographical area and unique administrative circumstances.A major focus of the meeting was the need for equitable and balanced administrative reorganisation of Ladakh, particularly addressing the concerns of the Kargil region. The MP demanded the creation of Sankoo-Suru and Shakar-Chiktan Shargole as separate districts, stating that both regions have long-standing demands for district status.
He highlighted that Sankoo-Suru is among the most densely populated, geographically remote and administratively significant areas of Ladakh, and that the creation of new districts would ensure more accessible administration and balanced development.The issue of tehsil reorganisation was also discussed in detail. Of the 17 new tehsils created across Ladakh, the erstwhile Kargil district received only four, with just two falling within Kargil and Drass district.
Several major and densely populated areas still lack even Nayabats. The MP demanded Nayabats in all major blocks of Kargil, their upgradation into tehsils, and additional sub-divisions for remote and densely populated areas of both Leh and Kargil.The MP also urged the Hon’ble Home Minister to ensure the early submission of the Justice B.S. Chauhan Committee report, so that affected families and the people of Ladakh can receive justice.
Several development and infrastructure priorities were also raised, including regular civil air services from Kargil under UDAN, feasibility studies for airports at Kargil and Zanskar, major irrigation projects to address drought conditions, a special relief package for flash-flood-affected areas, strengthening healthcare facilities in Kargil, early operationalisation of Government Medical College Leh and Engineering College Kargil, establishment of Degree Colleges at Sankoo and Bogdang-Turtuk, and expediting the Panikhar-Pahalgam Road project.
Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah Ji gave a patient and positive hearing to the issues raised and assured that the concerns would be looked into on priority.The MP expressed gratitude to the Hon’ble Home Minister for his time, understanding and assurance, and expressed hope for early progress on these long-pending issues in the larger interest of the people of Ladakh.5
