Ladakh Haji Haneefa Jan Raises Climate Change Concerns in Lok Sabha
New Delhi, March 18: Member of Parliament from Ladakh, Haji Haneefa Jan, today raised serious concerns over the growing impact of climate change in the Union Territory during his address in the Lok Sabha.Highlighting the alarming situation, the MP pointed out that Ladakh is facing increasing instances of drought and acute water scarcity, which are severely affecting the livelihoods of farmers and those dependent on horticulture.
He emphasized that unpredictable weather patterns and declining water resources are posing a major threat to the region’s traditional agricultural practices.Haji Haneefa Jan urged the Government of India to take immediate and concrete steps to mitigate these challenges. He strongly advocated for the development of sustainable irrigation projects to ensure water availability for farming communities.
Additionally, he called for the extension of comprehensive crop insurance schemes to safeguard farmers against climate-related losses.The MP also stressed the urgent need for establishing an Agriculture University in Ladakh, which would focus on research, innovation, and region-specific solutions to support farmers and promote sustainable agricultural practices in the high-altitude desert region.Reaffirming his commitment to the people of Ladakh, Haji Haneefa Jan stated that addressing climate change impacts must be a priority to secure the future of farmers and ensure long-term ecological balance in the region.
