Traffic Management of Zojila Pass Under Review Following Avalanche Incident
Kargil, Ladakh | 28 March 2026In light of the recent avalanche incident at the strategically important Zojila Pass, which has tragically claimed 7 lives, serious concerns have emerged regarding the traffic management and safety protocols governing this high-risk corridor.
Zojila Pass, known for its unpredictable weather conditions, frequent avalanches, and challenging terrain, remains a critical yet vulnerable link between Ladakh and Kashmir. The unfortunate loss of lives has brought the effectiveness of existing traffic regulation mechanisms under close scrutiny.
Authorities have initiated a comprehensive review of current traffic management procedures, including convoy regulation, weather advisories, coordination with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and the implementation of avalanche warning systems. Questions are also being raised about adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and the timing of vehicle movement through avalanche-prone zones.
The District Administration, in coordination with concerned agencies, has assured that necessary measures will be taken to strengthen safety protocols, enhance real-time monitoring, and ensure stricter enforcement of traffic advisories. Efforts are also underway to improve communication systems and deploy additional resources for emergency response and rescue operations.
Citizens and travelers are strongly advised to strictly follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel through Zojila Pass during adverse weather conditions.Further updates will be shared as the review progresses.
