₹1196.22 Crore Approved for Fotu La Tunnel to Boost All-Weather Connectivity in Ladakh
The Government has approved a major infrastructure project in the Union Territory of Ladakh with an investment of ₹1196.22 crore for the construction of a unidirectional twin-tube tunnel across Fotu La Pass on National Highway 1.
NH-01, connecting Uri–Srinagar–Leh, passes through Fotu La at an altitude of approximately 4,108 metres, making it the highest point along this crucial highway. The route serves as a vital strategic corridor and remains the primary supply line to Ladakh.
However, due to its steep gradients, sharp hairpin bends, and extreme winter conditions, the road frequently faces closures caused by heavy snowfall and icing. To overcome these challenges, the approved project includes a 1.96 km long twin-tube tunnel along with 0.69 km of approach roads, bringing the total project length to 2.65 km.
The tunnel will provide safe, reliable, and all-weather connectivity, significantly enhancing mobility in the region.Upon completion, the project is expected to reduce travel distance by approximately 8.5 km, ensuring faster movement of essential supplies, improving civilian connectivity, and strengthening strategic infrastructure in Ladakh.
This development marks a significant step towards modernizing road infrastructure in high-altitude regions and ensuring year-round accessibility to one of India’s most critical border areas.
