PCLS Kargil celebrates Mendoq rGyaspa “Purig pi Zbyardus” with cultural fervor, Launched Script for Purgi Language and First KSK Memorial Literary Award

Kargil, June 06, 2026: Purig Cultural and Literary Society Kargil celebrated annual Mendoq rGyaspa “Purig pi Zbyardus” in collaboration with Ladakh Academy of Art Culture and Languages Kargil at Amphitheatre TFC Kargil on June 6th 2026.

The event was organised in two sessions. The first session was held at 4:00 pm and attend by a large number of poets, artists and cultural enthusiasts. Dr. Mohammad Jaffar Akhoon, Honb’le Chairman and Chief Executive Councilor LAHDC-Kargil was the chief guest on the occasion. On arrival, the guests were warmly received with traditional purgi Pheyfings and khataqs. He visited different exhibition stalls including Purgi Traditional Handicrafts, Paintings by Purgi Fine Artists and variety of Purgi traditional food stalls.

The program was enthralled with Purgi rTsomskhor (Mushaira), Folk songs (rGyanglhu) of historical significance, Purgi Tsod(Riddles) and a documentary on Purig by Syed Ruhullah Mosavi.

In his address, CEC appreciated the efforts of PCLS Kargil in preserving age old traditions of Purig Kargil in terms of intangible heritage visa vis Purgi Language.

He also congratulated PCLS for becoming a registered body for the promotion and development of Purgi Language, literature and Culture to represent Purgi in future.

The second session started at 8:30 pm. Honb’le Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) Ladakh Haji Hanifa Jan graced the occasion as Chief Guest while District Magistrate Kargil Shri. Rakesh Kumar IAS was the guest of Honor.Whereas a number of Councilors from LAHDC-Kargil were also president among the dignitaries.

Noted Purgi Writer Kacho Isfandyar Khan Faridun presented a detailed talk about the evolution of Purgi Mythology and the legacy of folk songs. He also entertained the audience by singing some significant lines of his recently composed Folk song with his unique tone and style.

On this occasion, PCLS took a significant step by launching the Purgi Script as the language is being declared one of the official languages of UT Ladakh by Government of India. Honb’le Member of Parliament formally launched the Script in presence of District Magistrate Shri. Rakesh Kumar IAS, Shri Kacho Isfandyar Khan and Cultural Officer Mohammad Ali Tak. PCLS also came up with yet nother significant initiative of appreciation of local Purgi writers and artists.In this regard an award was presented in the category of art, culture and languages in the memory of Renowned Historian and son of the soil Late Kacho Sikander Khan Sikander and the first award was confferred posthumously to Late Syed Hussain Mosavi Umba for his immense contribution in promotion and development of Purgi Language and Literature.

A colorful cultural program was also presented during the event celebrating the age old tradition and cultural heritage of Purig. Mementos were also presented to the guests by PCLS Kargil.

In his address MP Ladakh congratulated PCLS for their successful efforts in achieving official status for Purgi language in UT Ladakh. He also saidd that every effort will be put to introduce Purgi language at school level and assured full moral as well as financial support to develop Purgi language and literature.

Mohammad Ali Tak Cultural Officer presented the vote of thanks to guests, participants and supporting departments on behalf of PCLS and LAACL Kargil. He also highlighted different activities of LAACL Kargil for promotion and development of vernacular languages of Purig.

Earlier, Members of PCLS visited the mausoleums of Late H. I. Sheikh Mohammad Mufeed (Founder AJUIAK), Late H. I. Sheikh Mohammad Hussain Zakiri (Founder IKMT Kargil) and Noted writer and Historian Late Kacho Skinder Khan Skinder at Ziamstyang Kargil.

The members paid rich traditional floral tributes and recited fatiha khwani as part of Mendoq rGyaspa celebration.
