The final breakthrough of the 13.153-kilometre Zojila Tunnel marks a historic milestone in India’s infrastructure development journey. Once completed, it will be the world’s longest single-tube bi-directional road tunnel at the highest altitude, showcasing India’s engineering excellence and commitment to strengthening connectivity in remote regions.Situated in the Zojila region between Baltal (Sonamarg) and Meenamarg (Drass–Kargil), the tunnel connects the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

The project has been undertaken to provide reliable all-weather connectivity across one of the most challenging Himalayan corridors in the country, which remains inaccessible for several months each year due to heavy snowfall, avalanches, and extreme weather conditions.Constructed at an altitude of approximately 11,578 feet above sea level, the Zojila Tunnel represents one of India’s most ambitious and significant mountain infrastructure projects.
