Drass, May 23:  Deputy Commissioner, Drass, Imteeaz Kacho  today laid the foundation stone  of the building of Government High School, Chowkiyal  along with Superintending Engineer, PWD (R&B) Circle Kargil, Dr.Tsewang Thinglas; Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Drass, Vishal Atri (JKAS); Councillor LAHDC-Kargil (Bhimbat Constituency) Abdul Wahid; Chief Education Officer, Kargil, Sonam Wangchuk and Executive Engineer, R&B-II Division, Kargil, Er.Mansoor M. Nissar. The ceremony was followed by a function organized by the High School which was attended, along with the dignitaries, by various officials, a large number of residents of Chowkiyal (including senior citizens) and students of schools. 

Cultural song and dance performances were presented by school students during the event. In his address,  the Deputy Commissioner thanked the village community and the School authorities for inviting him for the foundation stone ceremony and the cultural programme. He appreciated the role of the Councillor Abdul Wahid for his efforts in getting the project started and for taking various initiatives in the education sector. While appreciating the role of the Public Works Department, he directed the Department to have the work completed within the stipulated time and also urged that the building be made winter friendly in all respects and that quality standards be maintained.

The Deputy Commissioner expressed his delight to see that the school’s building is being constructed at a central and suitable location. He wished that after completion of the school’s building, it becomes a world class institution. It won’t be a surprise if students come to study here from other parts of the country, he added.  Further, he emphasized the Administration’s commitment towards enhancing quality education and ensuring better infrastructure in the newly formed Drass District. 

The Superintending Engineer, Dr.Tsewang Thinglas; Councillor (Bhimbat Constituency), Abdul Wahid and  Chief Education Officer, Sonam Wangchuk also spoke on the occasion. Local residents and school authorities expressed gratitude to the District Administration for initiating the much-needed educational infrastructure project in the area.

The SAMAGRA project is being executed by R&B-II Division of Kargil at an estimated cost of Rs. 220.00 lakh and aims at strengthening educational infrastructure in the region by providing improved facilities for students and staff.

Earlier, the Deputy Commissioner  met residents of Throngos on the way to Chokiyal and interacted with them. Various issues pertaining to education, handicraft and skill centres and a public park were brought into his notice. The ladies of the area sought help for establishing the centres to help them earn a livelihood. He have assurance that he will look into all the issues for early resolution.
