Director Sheep Husbandry Visits Karakul Sheep Farm Khumbathang, Reviews Development Works

Kargil, May 15: The Director of Sheep Husbandry Department Ladakh, Dr. Iftikhar Hussain, along with District Sheep Husbandry Officer Kargil, Dr. Niaz-ul-Hassanain, today visited the Karakul Sheep Farm at Khumbathang in Kargil to review ongoing activities and developmental works at the facility.

The dignitaries were accorded a warm reception by the Assistant Director of the farm. During the visit, a detailed presentation was made highlighting the farm’s operations, livestock productivity, agricultural activities, and key milestones achieved so far.

The Director inspected the agricultural fields and appreciated efforts to expand cultivable land, enhancing self-sufficiency in fodder production. He also lauded the plantation drive under which around 1,000 saplings were planted as part of environmental conservation initiatives.

Reviewing various sections of the farm, the Director assessed the health of livestock and ongoing lambing operations. He expressed satisfaction over the overall condition of the flock and the management practices, encouraging staff to maintain high standards of animal care. He also visited the vermicomposting unit and offered suggestions for its further development.

The visiting officials reviewed recent infrastructure upgrades, including the repair of the water storage tank, installation of a gate, stair works at the Assistant Director’s office, and construction of irrigation canals. They expressed satisfaction with the progress made toward modernising the farm.

However, while inspecting the Solar Water Lift Irrigation Plant under construction, the Director expressed concern over delays and directed officials to expedite its completion for timely benefits to the farm.

The Director also visited the newly constructed residential building of the Assistant Director and reviewed arrangements for a dedicated VIP section, offering guidance for further improvements.

The visit boosted the morale of the farm staff and reaffirmed the department’s commitment to developing Karakul Sheep Farm Khumbathang as a model centre for sheep breeding and husbandry in Ladakh.
