The Food Safety Department today conducted an inspection-cum-awareness drive across various fruits and vegetable shops in and around Leh to ensure the availability of safe and quality food for consumers.

During the inspection, special focus was given to seasonal fruits, particularly watermelon. On-the-spot testing was carried out to detect any artificial addition of red color, which is sometimes used to enhance the appearance of watermelon and make it look more appealing and ripe.

The inspection team collected samples and performed rapid tests to check for adulteration. Shopkeepers were also sensitized about the health risks associated with the use of unauthorized food colors and were strictly advised to comply with food safety standards and regulations.

The department emphasized that such malpractices not only mislead consumers but can also pose serious health hazards. Vendors were instructed to source and sell only fresh, natural, and unadulterated produce.

The Food Safety Department will continue to carry out regular inspections and testing drives to safeguard public health and ensure that safe food reaches every consumer.

Consumers are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious food practices to the concerned authorities.
