Title: Government Revokes Detention of Sonam Wangchuk with Immediate Effect
Leh, March 14: The Government of India has revoked the detention of renowned education reformer and innovator Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect, according to an official statement released by the Ministry of Home Affairs through PIB Delhi on March 14, 2026.
The government stated that it remains committed to fostering an environment of peace, stability, and mutual trust in Ladakh in order to facilitate constructive and meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders.Sonam Wangchuk had been detained on September 26, 2025, under the provisions of the National Security Act (NSA) following a law and order situation that arose in Leh on September 24, 2025. The detention order was issued by the District Magistrate of Leh with the objective of maintaining public order.
According to the statement, Wangchuk has already completed nearly half of the detention period under the Act.The government noted that it has been actively engaging with various stakeholders and community leaders in Ladakh to address the aspirations and concerns of the people.
However, it also expressed concern that bandhs and protests in the region have negatively affected the peaceful character of the society and impacted several sectors, including students, job aspirants, businesses, tour operators, tourists, and the overall economy.In view of ongoing efforts to restore normalcy and encourage dialogue, the government decided to revoke Wangchuk’s detention by exercising powers under the National Security Act.
The statement further reiterated the government’s commitment to providing all necessary safeguards for Ladakh and expressed hope that the region’s issues would be resolved through constructive engagement and dialogue, including discussions through the High-Powered Committee and other appropriate platforms.
