LG Ladakh Approves Creation of 17 New Tehsils to Strengthen Grassroots Governance
Ladakh has taken a significant step towards strengthening its revenue administration and improving governance at the grassroots level with the approval of 17 new Tehsils. This major policy decision increases the total number of Tehsils in the Union Territory from 15 to 32, ensuring more efficient, accessible, and people-centric administration.The reorganization has been undertaken to rationalize the revenue administrative framework by ensuring that every Revenue Village falls under a single Tehsil and every Tehsil is linked to a single district. This reform eliminates the administrative and jurisdictional overlaps that existed previously, paving the way for smoother governance and better coordination.
Under the new administrative structure:- Leh District will have 5 Tehsils- Kargil District will have 7 Tehsils- Changthang District will have 4 Tehsils- Nubra District will have 6 Tehsils- Zanskar District will have 4 Tehsils- Sham District will have 5 Tehsils- Drass District will have 1 Tehsil
This landmark initiative is in line with the vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, for a developed, prosperous, and well-governed Ladakh—a vision that has guided the Union Territory since its formation in 2019.The strengthened administrative framework is expected to enhance public service delivery, accelerate the implementation of development programmes, and ensure that citizens, particularly those residing in remote and border areas, have easier and quicker access to government services.The decision marks another important milestone in Ladakh’s journey towards inclusive development, efficient governance, and improved public administration.
