KVs Make Sanskrit Section Mandatory in Classes 6 and 9 from 2026
New Delhi, June 2026: The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) has introduced a significant change in its language policy for the 2026–27 academic session by making it mandatory for all Kendriya Vidyalayas across the country to maintain at least one Sanskrit section in Classes 6 and 9.The decision has been taken under the third-language framework (R3) and was communicated through an official circular issued on May 29.
According to the new directive, every Kendriya Vidyalaya will be required to ensure the availability of Sanskrit as a third-language option by establishing at least one dedicated Sanskrit section in the specified classes. The move aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes the promotion and preservation of Indian languages and cultural heritage.
Sanskrit, being one of the oldest classical languages of India, is expected to gain greater visibility and participation among students through this initiative.Education experts believe the decision will help students develop a deeper understanding of India’s linguistic and cultural traditions while strengthening the teaching and learning of Sanskrit in schools. The policy will come into effect from the beginning of the 2026–27 academic session across all Kendriya Vidyalayas.KVS officials have directed school administrations to make the necessary academic and administrative arrangements to ensure smooth implementation of the new language policy.
