Kargil, June 27: A successful Oyster Mushroom cultivation trial has been conducted at Thasgam in Drass by the Himalayan Volunteer Tourism and Humas Upliftment Organisation, demonstrating new livelihood opportunities for rural communities in Kargil district.
The trial, carried out under the guidance of Chief Trainer Vijay Singh, produced around 10 kilograms of fresh oyster mushrooms. Volunteers and members of Self-Help Groups from nearly 15 villages, including Thasgam, Bhimbhat, Lomochan, Jusgond, Kukshow, Shargole and several villages of Zanskar, participated in the programme.
The initiative received support from the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM) Kargil team, including District Programme Manager Muneer Ahmad Wani, Block Programme Manager Khadim Hussain and local SHG leaders.
Organisers said the successful cultivation trial has highlighted the potential of oyster mushroom farming as a sustainable source of income and nutrition for rural households. They expressed hope that more farmers and Self-Help Groups across the district would adopt mushroom cultivation to strengthen livelihoods and promote self-reliance.
