The Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh has directed the Deputy Commissioner, Kargil, to identify locations for the construction of water ponds/percolation tanks across different parts of the district. The Department of Irrigation and Flood Control has identified 20 locations for the collection of snowmelt water to be utilized for agricultural purposes.
Work on six ponds has already commenced through the Irrigation and Flood Control Department and the Rural Development Department, including three in Zanskar and one each in Haqnis, Gindiyal, and Lamar in Drass. These ponds are expected to be completed within a week.
The Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor has further directed that trees be planted around the tanks as well as in the nearby command areas of the villages. Work on the remaining water tanks will be taken up shortly.
