Kargil Echoes with Thousands of Voices as Ladakh Pushes Forward Its Long-Pending Demands
Sixth Schedule Demand Intensifies Following Call by Ladakh Apex Body–KDA Alliance
Kargil, Ladakh — Kargil witnessed a powerful outpouring of public support as thousands of residents gathered to reiterate Ladakh’s long-pending constitutional and developmental demands. The demonstration was organized following a joint call by the Ladakh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) , two leading platforms representing the aspirations of the people of Ladakh.
Participants from across the district assembled peacefully, raising slogans and holding placards demanding constitutional safeguards, particularly the inclusion of Ladakh under the **Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India**. Community leaders, civil society members, youth groups, and representatives of religious and social organizations joined the gathering, emphasizing unity and collective resolve.
Speakers at the event highlighted that Ladakh’s unique cultural identity, fragile ecology, and distinct socio-economic conditions require constitutional protection and greater local autonomy. They reiterated that the demand for Sixth Schedule status has been consistently raised since Ladakh became a Union Territory in 2019.
Leaders of the LAB–KDA alliance stated that their movement remains peaceful and democratic, aimed at securing safeguards for land, employment, culture, and political representation. They urged the Government of India to engage in meaningful dialogue and address the concerns of the people without further delay.
The gathering concluded with a reaffirmation of solidarity among different communities of Ladakh and a pledge to continue the democratic struggle until their demands are fulfilled.
